New Podcast Explores How Digital Rehabilitation Can Move from Pilot to Practice

The podcast episode is available (in Dutch)

Digital rehabilitation has the potential to improve access to care, support patients beyond clinical settings and help healthcare providers address increasing demand and workforce challenges. Yet many promising innovations struggle to move beyond pilot projects and become part of routine healthcare delivery.

This challenge is at the heart of a new episode of the Dutch podcast Innovatie in de Zorg, featuring Remco Hoogendijk, Innovation Manager at Sint Maartenskliniek, and Pim van der Hoorn from Health Valley Netherlands. Both are actively involved in this Interreg North-West Europe project Scale-Up4Rehab, which focuses on accelerating the adoption and scaling of digital rehabilitation solutions across Europe.

During the conversation, they discuss how virtual rehabilitation and blended care can become a meaningful part of daily healthcare practice. Rather than positioning digital solutions as a replacement for traditional care, they explore how technology can complement physical therapy and support patients in their rehabilitation journey.

The discussion highlights several key challenges facing the healthcare sector today, including:

  • Scaling successful innovations beyond pilot phases
  • Improving patient adherence and engagement
  • Addressing workforce shortages
  • Developing sustainable reimbursement models
  • Strengthening international collaboration
  • Integrating virtual reality and digital tools into existing care pathways

The speakers also explain why rehabilitation is particularly well suited to digital approaches. Rehabilitation often requires repetition, motivation and practice at home, making it an ideal area for virtual reality and remote support solutions that can enhance patient engagement and outcomes.

One of the central messages of the episode is that successful healthcare innovation is not only about developing new technology. It is equally about implementation, organisational change and creating the conditions needed for long-term adoption.

For Scale-Up4Rehab, these themes are highly relevant. The project brings together healthcare providers, researchers, innovators and regional stakeholders across North-West Europe to accelerate the uptake of digital rehabilitation solutions and make them accessible to more patients.
